There has been a rose garden in Welland Park for several decades. In 2010 a major upgrade was undertaken - the wooden beams across the brick pillars were replaced and rose beds redesigned and planted with David Austin shrub roses, climbers and ramblers.
Over time the vigour and health of some of the roses has declined and we have started a long term improvement programme that includes:
replacing soil in the rose beds before replanting with roses
cutting new beds where roses haven’t grown before
underplanting roses with perennials (mixed planting)
mulching in spring with compost made in Welland Park
selecting healthier varieties of rose
planting nematode mix Tagetes (marigolds) to cleanse the soil
We have over 560 roses in 63 beds made up of over 30 varieties
In the outer beds we have planted hybrid musk roses:
Vanity Penelope
Ballerina Felicia
Buff Beauty Kew Gardens
On the brick pillars we have the following climbers/ramblers:
Creme de la Creme Phyllis Bide
Princes Trust Blush Noisette
Mary Delaney Rambling Rosie
Ginger Syllabub Golden Gate
Claire Austin
Around the Bowls Pavilion we have Roald Dahl and Desdemona both planted with complementary perennials.
In the circular beds we have shrub roses:
Princess Alexandra of Kent Rhapsody in Blue
Elizabeth Port Sunlight
Lady of Shalott Eyes for You
The Alnwick rose Gertrude Jekyll
Darcey Bussell Molineux
The rose arch is planted with The Generous Gardener and Paul’s Himalayan Musk with Sweet Child of Mine in adjacent beds. By the flagpole Sophie Rochas (Kings Coronation rose) is planted.
